Sluzewiec is a neighbourhood of the Mokotow district of Warsaw, 5 miles south of the capital city of Poland. It boasts its own racecourse, the largest and most prestigious in Poland, which first opened for racing in June 1939. The left handed oval turf racecourse, with perimeter 12 furlongs, is set in 138 hectares of beautiful grounds, providing racing at the weekends from April through to November. Although its opening was immediately threatened by the events of World War II, remarkably it survived unscathed because a German garrison were stationed on the racecourse. Within a year of the War ending racing resumed and has gone from strength to strength. Its principal race is the Wielka Warszawska which is held in late Autumn and which was first contested as early as 1895. Other feature races include the Warsaw Derby over 2400 metres in July, first run in 1874, the St Leger over 2800 metres and the Ruler Stakes over 1600 metres, the trio of races forming the Polish Triple Crown. |
